PRONOUNS
We have learned that a sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought, and in order to express a complete thought, a sentence must have a complete subject, which is all of the words that tell what the sentence is about.
We have also learned that the complete subject usually includes a noun, which is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea (and is also the first of eight basic parts of speech).
And finally, we learned that a noun is the part of speech that is most often used as the simple subject of a sentence.
However, a pronoun, which is the second of eight basic parts of speech and is used in a variety of ways, is also sometimes used as the subject of a sentence instead of a noun. For you see . . .
A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun.
Pronouns make it possible to talk about a person, place, thing, or idea repeatedly without using the same word over and over again. For example, read this sentence . . .
Tim thinks Tim should share Tim’s candy with Tim’s sister.
Sounds a little dumb, huh? Let’s try using pronouns instead . . .
Tim thinks he should share his candy with his sister.
Ah, that sounds much better, doesn’t it? The sentence becomes less awkward if pronouns are used in place of the noun.

PRONOUNS
Because pronouns can be used in a variety of ways, they are divided into different categories. For example, there are seven personal pronouns, which are used to substitute for nouns that perform actions. Therefore, personal pronouns can be used as
the subject of a sentence.
The personal pronouns are: I, you, he, she, it, we and they.
EXAMPLE. She took the bus last night. (She substitutes for the name of the person who took the bus.)
Me, you, him, her, it, us, and them are object pronouns. They are used in place of the names of people or things that are affected by an action.
EXAMPLE. John took it. (It substitutes the name of the thing that John took.)
Of course, possessive pronouns are used to show possession or ownership. They include: my, your, her, his, its, our, and theirs.
EXAMPLE. Please give me back my pencil. (My substitutes for the name of the person that owns the pencil.)
Every pronoun must agree with its antecedent (the noun that the pronoun has replaced). A pronoun agrees with its antecedent when they match each other in both number and gender.
In other words, if the antecedent is singular, the pronoun must be singular. If the antecedent is plural, the pronoun must be plural. If the antecedent is feminine, the pronoun must be feminine. And finally, if the antecedent is masculine, the pronoun must be masculine as well.
