Writing Applications

RESPONSE TO LITERATURE GUIDE

DIRECTIONS:
In the fourth grade you are expected to be able to write compositions that describe and explain familiar objects, events, and experiences.

Moreover, it is expected that your writing will demonstrate a command of standard American English, knowledge and use of the writing process, and the effective application of drafting, research, and organizational strategies.

Consequently, when responding to literature, you should ask yourself the questions listed below in an effort to ensure that you have done all of the following:

  • Have I demonstrated a clear understanding of the literary work?
  • Did I support the things that I said or the judgments that I made by giving specific examples from the story and by referring to my prior knowledge?
  • Have I made sure that my response has a main idea along with supporting details, facts, and explanations?
  • Did I make absolutely sure that I addressed all parts of the writing task?
  • Did I demonstrate that I have a clear understanding of the purpose for which I was to write this response?
  • Did I keep a consistent point of view, focus, and organizational structure, including the use of paragraphs?
  • Have I included a variety of sentence types?
  • Did I fix all of the mistakes I made in grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling?
