SPELLING ACTIVITIES


Use your spelling words to complete the following contract. Pick one of the three spelling activity choices listed for each day -- Monday through Wednesday. You must choose different activities from week to week. Put each completed activity in the upper corner of your desk first thing when you enter class in the morning.

Your activity will be graded for completeness and neatness.

MONDAY
  • List all of the spelling words in alphabetical order.
  • Write each word on graph paper, placing one letter in each box.  Then draw an outline around the entire were to see its overall shape.
  • Study the most difficult words from the list using triangle spelling.

TUESDAY
  • Use each word in a sentence that has six other words in it besides the spelling word. Watch usage of the word, and make sure it is in the context of the appropriate definition. Underline each spelling word.
  • Write a paragraph or story that uses/includes all of your spelling words. Underline the spelling words.
  • Find the spelling words that came from your reading selection in context. Write the page numbers on which they are found and copy the sentences in which they appear, underlining the words.

WEDNESDAY
  • Using the definitions to create clues, design a crossword puzzle on graph paper. Include the clues and leave the puzzle blank.
  • Write each of your spelling words and next to each word, define it. Use your anthology's glossary in addition to a dictionary. Make sure that the definition applies to the way the word was used in class.
  • Write each spelling word and then rewrite it using the phonetic code. Don't forget to include accent marks.
