SUPPORTING A POSITION

DIRECTIONS: The following sentences include a position statement, three reasons for the position, supporting evidence for each reason, and a concluding statement. Use a separate sheet of paper to copy the sentences in in paragraph form, rearranging them so that they are in the correct sequence.


  • Federal law requires inspections of research facilities.

  • The strongest argument, though, is the medical benefit.

  • In short, until effective alternatives are found, scientists must rely on animal research.

  • Also, it is currently the safest way to test new medical treatments.

  • Animal research should be continued.

  • First, there are protections to ensure humane treatment.

  • New drugs must be tested first on animals because of the unknown effects.

  • Animal research has led to such developments as chemotherapy, transplants, and vaccines.
