Objective: Students describe the structural differences of various imaginative forms of literature.

Writing can be organized by format or by type of text.

TYPE OF TEXT
For example, nonfiction is a kind of text that gives you information about something that is true, or about events that really happened. Textbooks, like a science book, are one type of nonfiction.

On the other hand, the writers of fiction use their imaginations to make up stories that never really happened. A novel like Harry Potter is fiction.

The things you read are either stories, which is narrative writing, or information, which is expository writing.

If you were to read Lord of the Rings, you would be reading narrative writing. If you were to read a recipe book, this would be expository writing (since it is giving you information).

FORMAT
A novel is a book that tells a long fictional story.

A play is a story that is acted out on a stage to entertain an audience.

An essay is a short composition on one subject and presenting the personal opinion of the author.

An article (in a newspaper, magazine, etc.) covers information that its readers may find interesting.

Poetry is an expression of ideas and feelings in words that incorporate such features as rhythm, rhyme, etc.
DIRECTIONS: Decide if the given text is best categorized as fiction, nonfiction, a novel, expository text, a play, an essay, or an article. Then write your answer in the space provided.
