At TrinityTutors Cuisenaire rods are, without question, our favorite hands-on math resource. Ignore the dated appearance of this video and focus instead on how engrossed the students are in the lesson and how engaged their minds are as they manipulate facts, figures and concepts in their heads.

In our experience, these types of activities are the best way for students to develop a sense of whole numbers and the ability to represent and use them in flexible ways, including relating, composing, and decomposing numbers. (We begin with activities similar to those approximately three minutes into this video clip, but only after pupils have had an extended  period of free play.)
