JESUS' DESCRIPTIONS OF HELL

Though it is said early Judaism had no concept of hell, the Book of Daniel indicates some who slept in the dust of the earth awakened to everlasting life, while others awakened to shame and everlasting contempt.

The New Testament suggests that originally, all souls went to Hades (or Sheol), the place of dead, which was separated into one section (Abraham's bosom) for those waiting to enter heaven, and a second section (Gehenna) for those waiting to enter hell. The first group went to heaven with Jesus after He rose from the grave and they now wait for the "New Jerusalem." The second group will be thrown into hell (the lake of fire) with Satan after the final judgement.
