Establishing the Setting

The concept of setting includes everything that goes into the making of the environment in which characters operate. Just as painters include backgrounds and objects to render ideas, authors use setting to render meaning and establish the emotional atmosphere in which action takes place. The way characters respond and adjust to the setting can reveal many of their strengths and weaknesses, and an author may have the setting intersect with characters to underscore the importance of a particular place, circumstance or time period, with characters helped or hurt by their surroundings as they reveal the degree to which they share or oppose the beliefs or values of their day.
