DISCUSSING THE THEME

Before beginning any new literary unit, be sure to discuss the central theme with your instructor—not only because it will promote your understanding and appreciation for the literature you are about to encounter, but also because it is through discussion that we are often exposed to differeing points of view and reactions to information; learn to express our thoughts and opinions coherently; and come to respect and appreciate the ideas and feelings of others. Moreover, this activity is likely to help your instructor gauge your level of understanding and familiarity with the topic at hand along with its related concepts so he or she can be better prepared to address your particular interests.
