CHOOSING UNIT SUBJECTS

In designing a reading program for your learner, you might want to divide the school year into four to six units, each of which you'll assign a central subject. These subjects will serve as organizing concepts to help guide your youngster through the learning process as he or she strives to maximize his or her understanding of the various  reading selections.

There are universal subjects that encourage deep and critical thinking (like friendship or survival) and research subjects that foster inquiry and reseach in other content areas (like things that fly or ancient civilizations). Once you have chosen your subjects, the next step will be to select corresponding literature.
