LESSON 1
This presentation discusses how to advance the ability of students to recognize meaningful word units, such as bases, root words, prefixes and suffixes. It explains syllabication rules and details a method for teaching them holistically. How suffix spelling changes rules, contractions and possessives is also covered.

1. Words ending with s, x, z, ch, or sh, add -es

2. Words ending in y preceded by a consonant, change the y to i if suffix begins with e

3. Words ending with a silent e, drop the e if suffix begins with a vowel
